First created from sites in New Mexico in 1970, the ongoing series of earth castings is my homage to the Earth and personal redefinition of landscape art. Processes of wind, water, and sometimes animal traces are recorded visually in frozen moments of time. Though they look familiar and natural, most castings are the reverse of Earth's original contours. Conceptually, the viewer becomes the land - looking up and out. The castings are often shown as wall pieces in gallery installations, sometimes arranged as they were cast. They have also been used as markers indicating cardinal solar coordinates on the external horizon beyond the walls, as "viewed" from a central point inside the installation. Presenting the land out of context invites viewers to see it anew, and hopefully appreciate the Earth, their connection to it, and their dependence on it.
