These sculptures - selected from some thirty-five years of projects - are ritually interactive, contemplative, and/or personally sacred works. I consider the seminal "nugget" series as sculptural metaphors for growth, change, and universal forces of nature. Pit-fired ceramic pieces and subsequent projects in a variety of materials deal with the natural elements, organic life, terrestrial and celestial cycles and processes, and our place within these systems. In one series, marbleized red and white stoneware embodies ideas of stratification, the forces of gravity and water. A recent video piece explores the phase change between solid and liquid caused by solar energy. Another recent (2006-present) project combines antique architectural fragments with digital prints of the scanned elements. The pieces celebrate Islamic, Spanish, and Mexican visual culture, as well as the artists who created the original works.
