Since 1984 I have produced some twenty permanent, site-specific, architectural scale works. Relating visually and conceptually to their immediate surroundings, sculptures crafted from materials such as the recycled pieces of an obsolete steel plant are also aligned with the larger celestial environment. Usually, elements that comprise the permanent installations are oriented to solar rising/setting points on the horizon at the summer and winter solstices, spring and fall equinoxes. In the more monumental works such as Sunhenge and Solar Tone Towers, multiple elements are aligned with each other and sited to the cardinal coordinates. My interest in these orientations is humanistic rather than scientific - they present phenomena that are shared by and that sustain all peoples. This suggests the hope that a shared appreciation of them may offer one basis for a unified global consciousness that works to preserve the Earth and its inhabitants.
